Creating Target Portfolios

Creating Target Portfolios

A Target Portfolio, or Target, is a combination of Models, Securities, Cash, and even other Targets with defined allocations assigned to a single account. The Rebalancer uses the definitions within a Target to suggest trades that will keep an account within the defined parameters.

A Target Portfolio can be created from one of three possible starting points:

  • Create a Target using the Portfolio Builder
  • Create a pre-filled Target using selected models
  • Create a blank Target

Using the Portfolio Builder

The Portfolio Builder is a creation tool that gives you the most control and the most data when creating a new Target. To begin the creation process:

  1. Navigate to Investment Management > Model Center.
  2. Search for and select the Products (Models) you want to include in the Target, using the checkboxes on the Product row.
  3. Click Build Portfolio in the upper right of the grid to open the Portfolio Builder.

Choosing the Target contents

If desired, you can search for and add additional models or securities to the Target with the search bar. The list will automatically filter as you type. Select an item from the search results to add it to the Target.

Click to remove an item from the Target.

Setting the Weighting

Weighting determines what percent of the total Target each component is allocated, with any remainder going to Cash. The total weightings must equal 100%.

By default, all models or holdings (except for Cash) added to the Target are set to a “locked” weight, indicated by the at the end of the row. This means that the weighting for the item must be entered manually.

You can unlock any item by clicking the lock icon. The icon changes to .

Enter the desired weighting for all locked items, and then click in the bottom right to evenly distribute the remaining weight to all unlocked items. If the manual weightings exceed 100% a warning message displays and you will need to change your values.

Inspecting the Target Portfolio

Now that the contents of the Target Portfolio are set, you can use the available pie chart to check the Allocation and Individual distributions and the Benchmark & Historical Performance section below to view the minimum investment for the Target as well as compare its performance to various industry benchmarks.

Creating and Saving

Once you are satisfied with the contents, click Create Target Portfolio in the upper-right. This takes you to the Target Portfolio Detail view.

  1. Use the Edit Name control and assign the Target a properly descriptive name.
  2. Use the Select Target Enterprise drop-down to assign the correct enterprise. This cannot be edited later.
  3. If no further changes are needed, click Save Target in the bottom right of the screen.

The Target Portfolio is now created and can be used.

Creating a Pre-filled Target

This method functions much like the previous except that it skips the Portfolio Builder screen entirely and takes you directly to the Target Portfolio Detail view for you to finish any needed edits.

  1. Navigate to Investment Management > Model Center.
  2. Search for and select the Products (Models) you want to include in the Target, using the checkboxes on the Product row.
  3. Click Create Target in the upper right of the grid.
  4. Use the Edit Name control and assign the Target a properly descriptive name.
  5. Use the Select Target Enterprise drop-down to assign the correct enterprise. This cannot be edited later.
  6. Use the Allocation Controls at the bottom to add or remove components and assign weightings to the included components. See Editing Target Portfolios for full details on these controls.
  7. Once your allocations are set and equal 100%, click Save Target.

The Target Portfolio is now created and can be used.

Creating a Blank Target

This method functions much like the previous except that no models or holdings are included and are instead added while in the Target Portfolio Details page.

  1. Navigate to Investment Management > Model Center.
  2. Click Create New Target in the upper right of the grid.
  3. Use the Edit Name control and assign the Target a properly descriptive name.
  4. Use the Select Target Enterprise drop-down to assign the correct enterprise. This cannot be edited later.
  5. Use the Allocation Controls at the bottom to add or remove components and assign weightings to the included components. See Editing Target Portfolios for full details on these controls.
  6. Once your allocations are set and equal 100%, click Save Target.

The Target Portfolio is now created and can be used.
